An Economy based on Agriculture and Saharan Tourism

Agriculture represents the most important sector for local economy thanks to the water resources which are used to create irrigated perimeters, the rehabilitation of the oasis and the production of early crops through geothermal energy.

The economy of the region is also known for vegetable crops, livestock and the production of several varieties of dates (about 79 900 t / year) and namely Deglet Nour (52 800 t / year) representing 55.1 % of domestic production.

The tourism sector has been continuously developing from one year to another and is drawing thousands of visitors attracted by the charm and beauty of the desert oasis. The tourist infrastructure of the region is modernizing (hotel units were created, excursions are organized, and an international festival is held annually in the delegation of Douz)...

Given its agricultural and tourist character the governorate of Kébili only has 28 firms (with a workforce of 10 or more employees) of which 8 are totally exporting.

A Developing Infrastructure

The governorate of Kébili has a continuously developing basic infrastructure :

  • A road network (760 km of paved roads) linking the region to neighboring governorates and to Algeria,

  • A cyber park and a business incubator,

  • Several industrial areas equipped to accommodate new projects.

The governorate is also served by :

  • The Tozeur-Nafta and Gafsa-Ksar Airports which are located 90 km away from Kébili

  • The commercial port of Gabès which is located 120 km from Kebili.

Available Human Resources

The creation of the Higher Institute of Technological Studies, which opened in October 2003, can supply the local labor market in qualified and skilled personnel.

The governorate has 2 public vocational training centers and 7 private centers with a training capacity of 1250 positions training 1053 students. The training programs offered by these centers mainly specialize in sanitary equipment, refrigeration, sewing, crafts and office automation.
