Governorate of Kairouan

Introduction
 

The Governorate of Kairouan is located in Central West Tunisia, in a the privileged geographic position at the crossroads between the north, the south, the east and the west of the country. It is bounded by the governorates of Zaghouan, Siliana, Sidi Bouzid, Sfax, Sousse and Mahdia.


Human resources
 

This governorate has a population of 551,248 (INS 2007). It is mostly rural, with an urbanization rate of 31.8% and a population density of 83 inhabitants per km2.

Higher education facilities are constantly evolving: Kairouan’s university complex can accommodate over 13,922 students in seven higher education institutions

Infrastructure
 
 
The Monastir International Airport, which is at 62 km, i.e. less than one hour’s drive, away.
The electricity network nearly covers all of the governorate area with an electrification rate of 99.6%.
A dense and developed road network (692.5 Km of asphalt roads) linking the city to the rest of the country. The region also has 1 358.5 Km of rural asphalt paths.
The commercial port of Sousse, which is at 57 km, ie 45 minutes’ drive, away..
Three natural parks and a cyber park are located in Kairouan.
The governorate hosts 5 Industrial parks 3 of which had been fitted out covering a surface of 80 ha.
A telephone density of 48.4 per 100 inhabitants.
This governorate has substantial hydraulic resources: 3 dams, 22 earthfill dams, 62 earthfill lakes, 1,200 shallow-water wells, and 500 deep-water wells.

Major business activities
 

Agriculture remains the most important sector for the local economy. It employs 30% of the active population. Indeed,   Kairouan benefits from 14% of the country’s irrigated areas and is major products are olives, almonds, pepper, tomatoes, red meat...

During the last decade, Kairouan has experienced a remarkable development of its industrial sector, namely in manufacturing industries. In fact the region hosts 108 companies (employing on average 10 persons and above) 25 of which are totally exporting.

From time immemorial, Kairouan has developed unique arts crafts: chiseling, cloth-weaving and saddle-making. But the most widespread craft for which the city is most renowned is still the art of carpet-weaving.

The former capital of the  Aghlabite dynasty of emirs is full of historical memories and impressing monuments (the great mosque, Sidi Sahbi mausoleum, Aghlabite pools,…) but also  Sidi Mâamer, and the parks of Chrichira, Touati and Zaghdoud...), the town has also been declared as a world heritage site, which is the why it became one of the four most visited sites in Tunisia just like Carthage, El Jem and the Bardo museum.
