Governorate of Nabeul

Introduction
  Located at the far northeast of the country, and surrounded by the Mediterranean sea on sides (north and east), the Governorate of Nabeul - or the Cap Bon region as Tunisians call it – is the country’s leading sea resort destination. This region is also known for its natural beauty, the variety of its farm produce and the investment opportunities it offers in tourism and industry.

Human resources
 

This governorate has a reasonably dense population of 748,324 (January 2010), with an urbanization rate of 66.3%. The following branches of activity account for most of the employed labor force which totals 257,732: farming (21.5%), manufacturing (26.7%) and others sectors (26,7%).

There are 6 higher education institutions with 11,353 students in economics, arts, and technology.

In addition, this governorate has 17 state vocational training centres offering many courses in different fields such as: maintenance, general mechanics, shipbuilding mechanics, construction, tourism, agriculture … These centres provided the local job market with 10 032 new graduates.

   
Infrastructure
  This governorate has an increasingly improved basic infrastructure:
The Tunis-Carthage International Airport is at 67 km away from Nabeul.
A motorway linking the Hammamet area with Tunis, the capital.
A road network linking the region to neighbouring governorates.

The region is well provided with water resources: it has surface aquifer and a deep aquifer containing 260 m cubic meters of groundwater, seven dams and 36 earthfill lakes.

Developed industrial estates there are 8 developed zones and 2 zones currently being developed at Soliman and Korba.
Major businesses
 

The region’s economic fabric is quite advanced and the major economic sectors - ie farming, industry and tourism – are well represented

There are 712 industrial companies (providing 10 or more jobs) and 346 firms with foreign equity holdings operating in industry, services, agriculture and tourism.  406 of the above firms are exclusively exporting companies.

The Governorate of Nabeul is well-known for its citrus fruit (85% of national production), tomatoes (12 processing plants accounting for 63% of national production), strawberries (97%), vineyards (12 processing plants accounting for 40% of national production) and condiments (90% of national production).

Fishing continues to play an essential part in the region’s economy, with a production of 165,680 tons, that is 16% of national production.

Thanks to its beautiful natural endowment (essentially as a sea resort), its comfortable luxury hotels, its diversified leisure facilities (a leasure park, a playground/games centre, a golf course…), the region has become a privileged tourist destination. In fact, it is Tunisia’s top tourist area, with a capacity of 52 million  beds or 22.7% of the country’s total capacity. The region has recorded 7,3 milles hotel nights in 2009, with 22.6% of the total recorded for the whole country.

The region has a well developed banking and financial network consisting of 109 bank subsidiaries distributed over the whole area.
