Governorate of Jendouba

Introduction
 
The Governorate of Jendouba lies at the top northwest of Tunisia. It is bounded by the governorates of Kef and Siliana to the South, the governorate of Béja to the East, the border zone with Algeria to the West (135 km) and the Mediterranean sea to the North, with a coastline of 25km. This governorate has the most rainy weather and its annual rainfall goes up to 1,000mm along the coast and beyond 1,500mm at Aïn Draham. While it is agricultural by tradition, this region is experiencing a spectacular growth of the tourism sector (in the Tabarka/Aïn Draham area).

Human resources
 
The population of this governorate (420,900 as of July 2007) is mostly rural, with an urbanization rate of 28.1% and an active labor force of 114,903.
A new impetus was given to this governorate through the establishment of a university complex consisting of:
Faculty of Legal, Economic and Management Sciences at Jendouba
Jendouba Higher Institute for Human Sciences
Tabarka Silvio-Pastoral Institute
Jendouba Higher Institute for Technological Studies

This governorate has 13 public and 16 private vocational training centers, with an overall capacity of 4,900 students, offering courses in hotel maintenance, industrial equipment maintenance, farming, handicrafts..

Infrastructure
  Jendouba has a modern, continuously upgraded basic infrastructure consisting of
The Tabarka International Airport (capacity 300 000 passengers/years)

A dense and modern road network which will grow when the second part of the Oeud Zarga-Bousselem motorway will be completed.

A railway linking Tunis to Ghardimaou and Algeria.
Developed industrial estates developed by the Industrial Estate Agency (AFI) covering an area of 36.4 hectares.
A modern telecommunications network covers the whole region (GSM, RTM Mobile telephone Network, DSL)

Technopole of Jendouba (being set up).

643 million m3 of water have been mobilized, including 362 million m3 mainly from four large dams, 17 hillside dams and 39 small lakes.


Major businesses
 

Agriculture in the governorate of Jendouba is mainly based on cereals, breeding, market gardening, and arboriculture. En Indeed, thanks to a large agricultural area estimated at 300 700 ha, of which 170 000 ha of useful land, and a forest potential estimated at 120 000 ha ...

The Jendouba governorates participates largely in the national production of strategic food with 139 thousand  tons of  cereals, 26 thousand  tons of  fruits, 153 thousand  tons of  vegetables, 116 thousand  tons of  milk et 12.3 thousand  tons of  red meat. The governorate also produces 100 000 m3 of wood and 70 000 quintals of cork.

Fishing resources in the region of Tabarka are estimated at about 20 thousand tons per year and are still not used to their maximum in spite of an appropriate basic infrastructure.

The industrial activity of the region is based on the agri food sector which accounts for 45 % of the projects, 68 % of investments and 42 % of direct industrial employment. It is also characterized by the presence of a large company well known on the national scale, namely la Laiterie du Nord-Ouest. The region hosts 266 industrial units, 13 of which are totally exporting units.

The Tabarka area is experiencing a substantial growth of its tourism, thanks to its beautiful seaside and forest endowment and to the existence of an increasingly diversified and modern tourism infrastructure: the Tabarka International Airport, the golf course, the marina, the comfortable luxury hotels and the Hammam Bourguiba spa. Located 20km away from Tabarka, this spa specializes in the treatment of the respiratory system ailments. It is developing fast in order to meet a potential demand estimated at 1.390,000 hotel nights.

The handicrafts sector creates and produces goods reflecting the region’s characteristic: coral working, cork processing, creation of wood artifacts and pottery.


Investment opportunities
 
Several investment opportunities are to be found in the region in the fields of agriculture, fishing, agri-food business, useful substances tourism and communication technologies:
Agriculture and fishing (fruit tree growing, introducing cows in irrigated areas, organic farming, mushroom growing, trawlers,  floriculture...).
Agri food (conditioning agricultural products, transforming forest products, cheese making...).

Useful substances (marble extraction and processing, plaster cutting and sculpting, industrial pottery, manufacturing of bleaching products for paper and paint industries).

Tourism and handicrafts (accommodation facilities, spa resort, leisure boat, making of handicraft items in wood or cork...).

Communication technologies (software development, websites maintenance and development, remote services...).
