Introduction |
| |
The Governorate of Béja is situated in North-West Tunisia, holding a central position which enables it to be a median axis between the country’s coastline and its western part. It is surrounded by five other governorates and has a small opening to the sea (26 km of coast). Béja is crossed by large main roads linking the country’s eastern and western parts as well as by railways linking Tunis, the capital, to the Algerian border. |
Infrastructure |
| |
This region’s infrastructure consists of:
The highway between Tunis and Oued Zargua which is 67 Km long, 37 Km in the governorate of Beja. |
A road network made up of 4 trunk roads linking it to the country’s capital, and eastern and western parts. |

A railway network linking the capital to the west of the country, up to the Algerian border. |

Béja is 65 km away from the Tabarka International Airport and 100 km from the ports of Bizerta and Tunis. |

A modern telecommunications network covering the whole region (GSM, RTM, DSL). |

A public economic business center aiming at promoting private initiative in all sectors. It is located at the North West Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCINO). |

7 industrial areas developed by the Industrial estate Agency ( AFI) covering a surface of 92 ha. |

Considerable hydraulic resources estimated at 565 million cubic meters, mainly provided by 3 large dams, 22 earthfill dams and 56 earthfill lakes.
Major business activities |
| |
Agriculture is the region’s top economic activity, thanks to its impressive natural resources, particularly the amount of rainfall, the substantial water resources, the soil type and the extent of tillable farmland, which is estimated at 251,000 hectares of which 24,000 ha are irrigated zones. This productive farm potential enables the governorate to make a substantial contribution to the national output of strategic foodstuffs (349,000 tons of cereals, 34,000 tons of fruit, 78,000 tons of vegetables, 123,000 tons of milk and 12,500 tons of red meat). |

The region has also devoted bout 1,300 ha to organic crops namely for arboriculture (olive trees). |

The governorate counts 297 industrial units with 12,044 employees (107 of these units provide 10 or more jobs). |

There are 22 units in the region that export their entire production and 14 companies with foreign participations operating in industry, services, agriculture and tourism. |

The distribution of industrial plants per field demonstrates the dominance of the food processing businesses branch (27 olive oil presses, 2 tomato canneries, the Béja Sugar Plant, a yeast plant, a semolina/flour mill, a carbonated drinks plant, a dairy, a yeast factory...). |

The region’s fishery potential, estimated at 800 tons of migrating fish, is still under-exploited. However, fish farming in the dams has allowed the breeding of several species, particularly barbels, eels, carps, mullets and catfish.
Investment opportunities |
| |
Considering the region’s natural endowments, the continuous upgrading of its infrastructure, its skilled labor and the granted tax and financial incentives, the Béja governorate affords both native and foreign investors a favorable environment for starting projects in various economic sectors, namely:

Farming and fishing (the integration of dairy farming into plant productions and the development of fishing, organic crops, fruit tree growing, geese and duck breeding and force-feeding). |

Food processing (canning, sterilization, deep-freezing, storage and essential oil extraction). |

Exploitation of quarry products (rocks, sand, marble, useful substances...). |

The promotion of archeological sites (Dogga, Aîn Tounga, El Faouar), dams’ water surfaces, forest landscapes in line with the promotion of ecological and cultural tourism through the creation of leisure resorts and stopping places. |

Communication technologies: (software development, websites maintenance and development, remote services...).
