Governorate of Tunis

Introduction
 
Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is the country’s most important industrial center.
Located in the center-east of the Greater Tunis region and opening out onto the Mediterranean sea, the governorate has a Mediterranean climate and an annual rainfall of up to 470mm.

Human resources
 

Representing about 10% of the country’s total population, the population of the governorate of Tunis is distinguished by a high urbanization rate (100%) and of a high schooling rate of 97.8%) as well as competent and qualified human resources and skilled labor mostly active in the sectors of services (73.4%) and manufacturing (18 %).

The governorate hosts a large array of educational institutions including school, university and vocational training facilities: 38 higher education institutions providing courses to over 94,338 students in technical subjects, commerce, technology and engineering. These institutions are:

There are 21 public vocational training centers from which 13,247 trainees graduate every year in special skills highly demanded by the industrial companies operating in electronics, telecommunications, agri-food  industries, computer science, management, etc.

Infrastructure
  The Tunis governorate has a highly developed basic infrastructure:

The country’s biggest airport : Tunis-Carthage International Airport , with an average capacity of 4.5 million passengers per annum.

The Goulette commercial port, which accounts for 98% of the total passenger traffic through Tunisian ports.
The port of Tunis will be turned into a marina.
A railway network linking the capital to the country’s major governorates.
A thick road network consisting of motorways and trunk roads linking the capital to the other governorates.
A network of streetcar lines linking the capital to its northern and southern suburbs.

Several road interchanges were built on the capital’s major highways, ensuring greater traffic fluidity.

Developed industrial estates: the governorate has 4 estates, covering a total area of 410 hectares.
Pleasant living conditions, with an electrification rate of 99.9% and a telephone network of 181,1 lines per 100 inhabitants.

Major business activities
  Industry and services are the main activities of the Tunis region economy:

381 industrial companies (with 10 employees or more) are established in the Tunis governorate, 232 of which are totally exporting. These companies are working mainly in textiles and clothing, leather and footwear, electronic and electrical industries  and provide some 41,000 jobs.

There are also 349 firms with foreign equity holdings, operating in the sectors of industry, tourism, farming and services;

The service sector is highly encouraged and developed in the region: many engineering and other consulting firms operating in the economic and technical sectors as well as in market research, are already established;

With its wealth of historic monuments (Carthage, the Bardo Palace, Tunis Medina) and tourist sites (the famous Sidi Bou Saïd village, the hills of Gammarth and La Marsa), its varied recreation amenities ('Tunis Happy Days' amusements city), the 'El Bouhaïra 'recreational mini-park and the Soukra golf course, the Tunis region is making notable and continuous progress in recreational tourism and, more specifically, in convention and business tourism in which it is becoming increasingly specialised.
The governorate boasts a highly developed banking and financial services network (267 bank branches) representing all the country’s financial institutions.
