The governorate of Tozeur, the capital of the Jerid, is in south-western Tunisia. It is bounded by the Gafsa governorate to the north-east, the Kébili governorate to the south-east and by Algeria to the north-west. Along with its agricultural tradition, this governorate is currently witnessing a remarkable growth of Saharan tourism.

The Tozeur governorate has a population of 102,800 (NSI 2009), with a high urbanisation rate (70.4%) and a population density of 18.4 inhabitant/Km2. |

The active labor force is distributed between industry (6.1%), farming (20.8%), public works and construction (9.4%), services (34.2%), mining and energy (1.1%) and the civil service (26.3%). |

The Tozeur-Nafta international airport, linking the region to a number of European capitals (Tozeur is 2 hours’ flight from Paris). |

A trunk road (GP 3) links Tozeur to several governorates: Tozeur is 450 km from Tunis, 300 km from Sfax, and 57 km from the Algerian border. |

A network of roads linking the Governorate to neighboring governorates (500 km of paved roads). |

Ten industrial estates covering a total of 84.7 hectares of which 27.5 ha are already in use. | |

The region has 8 363 ha of date palm trees production 38 500 tons of dates per year, 856 ha of areas devoted to market gardening and 680 ha of forage.

The region is renowned for the high quality of its dates, particularly the “Deglet Nour” variety, which is highly appreciated throughout the world for its transparent flesh and succulent taste. |

The Tozeur region also has substantial hydraulic resources (207.9 million cubic metres: over 1884 shallow water wells and about 200 drill-holes), which allowed the development and progress of farming. |
 |
Saharan tourism is impressively growing in a spectacular way in the region: Tozeur has a diversified tourist infrastructure made up of varied and comfortable accommodation facilities (41 hotels totalling 6,158 beds), attractive leisure facilities (a golf course, the “Dar Chraïet” world-renowned museum, a vast palm-grove, hilly oases and cascades). |

The activity of the region being mainly focused on agriculture and tourism, Tozeur has no more than 40 industrial enterprises (providing 10 jobs or more), 29 of which being totally exporting. They are active mostly in the sectors of industry, agroindustry, textiles …
