Governorate of Bizerte

Introduction
 

Situated at the country’s far northeast, the governorate of Bizerte enjoys a privileged geographic position with a wide opening onto the Mediterranean: a coastline of 250 km. It is bound by the governorates of Ariana and Manouba to the south, the governorate of Béja to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the east.

Human resources
 

The governorate of Bizerta has a population of 544,600 (January 2010) working in agriculture and fisheries (22.5%), manufacturing industries (26.9%) and services (38.4%) and others sectors (12.4%).

The governorate has a network of primary, secondary and tertiary education and vocational training institutions supplying the local job market with qualified competencies and skilled labour in specialties highly sought-after by firms established in the area.

Bizerte has seven establishments of higher education where 10,344 students pursue a number of subjects

There are 6 vocational training centers which can accommodate 896 students. The main training courses offered at these centers are: maintenance, general and naval mechanics, construction, irrigated farming, clothes design and sewing, and handicrafts.

It has a wealth of hydraulic resources, with 4 large dams, 23 earthfill dams, 76 lakes and a groundwater table holding over 52 million cubic meters

Major business activities
 

Economic activity in the region focuses mainly on agriculture and industry. There are 366 companies that employ 10 people or more, including 226 foreign companies. 239 of the firms in this region export all of their production, mainly in textiles, leather, footwear, agro food, mechanical and electronic products.

With an extensive fertile farming area of 328,000 ha, the governorate of Bizerta is well-known for its agricultural riches, such as legumes (40% of national production), red meat (15% of national production), dairy produce (18.4% of national production) and dessert grapes.

With 250 km of coastline and 5 fishing ports, Bizerta is one of Tunisia’s richest fishing regions, renowned for the quality of its oily fish.

The country’s main banking and financial institutions are present in this governorate, with a network of 54 subsidaires.
