Governorate of Zaghouan

Introduction
 

The Governorate of Zaghouan enjoys a privileged medial position between the governorates of the Northeast, the northwest and the centre. It is bounded by the governorates of Ben Arous, Manouba and Ariana to the north, those of Sousse and Kairouan to the south and those of Siliana and Béja to the east. Agricultural by tradition, this governorate has recently started industrialization.


Human resources
 

The Zaghouan governorate has a population of 169,300 (as of January 2008). With a high schooling enrolment rate (92.7%) and a low urbanization rate (38.7%).

The following fields account for most of the workforce in employment: farming (22.4%), services (36.5%), and manufacturing (27.1%).

There are 3 higher education institutions:
Higher School of Agriculture, Mogran
Higher Institute for Technological Studies, Zaghouan
Higher Institute of Applied Studies in Humanities, Zaghouan

In addition, this governorate has 2 state vocational training centres, with a capacity of 560 students, offering courses in a variety of handicrafts.


Infrastructure
 
The Tunis-Carthage International Airport is at 60 km , that is 90 minutes’ drive, away from Zaghouan.
A network trunk roads linking the region to neighbouring governorates (Tunis, Sousse, Kairouan).

Zaghouan is 60 minutes away from the Radès commercial port.

Developed industrial estates: seven fully developed industrial estates comprising 352 plots.

Zaghouan is renowned for the wealth of its water resources: it has 3 dams, 16 earthfill dams, 76 earthfill lakes, and a deep aquifer containing millions of cubic meters of groundwater.


Major businesses
 

Currently, the region is starting to industrialize with the establishment of 233 industrial enterprises (providing 10 or more jobs) and 82 foreign firms, of which 178 exclusively for export.

The region has a large farming area (271,000 hectares, of which 186,000 ha are tillable), which produces milk (17,000 liters/year), red meat (7,400 tons/year), olive oil and honey.

The region has a banking and financial network consisting of 14 agency representing Tunisia’s major financial institutions.
